Evoking Excellence in Others
Topic(s): Leadership & Coaching

Author(s): James Flaherty

James Flaherty is the founder of New Ventures West, where I completed my Integral Coach® certification, so Coaching: Evoking Excellence in Others is foundational to the way I was trained to think about coaching. Flaherty presents coaching as development of the whole person rather than simply solving immediate problems, with attention to self-observation, adult development, purpose, relationships, somatic intelligence, and practices that support lasting change.

His approach is explicitly secular and draws from developmental psychology, mindfulness, somatic practices, philosophy, and Eastern wisdom traditions. Flaherty is also a Zen student, so I do not read this as a Christian coaching text or assume every philosophical premise maps neatly onto a biblical worldview.

That said, several ideas are deeply complementary to Christian formation when placed under a biblical framework. Integral Coaching pays attention to who someone is becoming, not merely what they are accomplishing. It values self-observation, embodied habits, relational presence, community, and practices that move insight into lived change. Those themes resonate with Christian ideas of spiritual formation, sanctification, discernment, and the reality that transformation involves more than acquiring information.

For me, the key is theological discernment. Where Integral Coaching may speak of wholeness, presence, or accessing inner wisdom, I ground those ideas differently as a Christian. Our identity is not ultimately discovered by looking inward, but received in relationship to God and understood through Scripture. Still, Flaherty’s work gives coaches a rigorous way to notice patterns, ask better questions, attend to the body and relationships, and design practices that support meaningful change. If you want to understand the theory behind the coaching methodology that shaped my own training, this is one of the most important books on my shelf.
