Vindicating the Vixens

Revisiting Sexualized, Vilified, and Marginalized Women of the Bible
Topic(s): Women, Calling & Ministry

Author(s): Sandra L. Glahn (editor)

Vindicating the Vixens is one of those books that makes you go back to the text and ask whether you have inherited assumptions that Scripture itself does not actually support. Sandra Glahn brings together a diverse group of evangelical scholars to revisit women such as Tamar, Rahab, Bathsheba, Hagar, Deborah, the Samaritan woman, and Mary Magdalene, especially where church tradition has sexualized, blamed, or flattened their stories.

Using historical, cultural, literary, and exegetical analysis, the contributors are not trying to make the Bible say something new. They are trying to read it more carefully and let the text correct familiar assumptions.

There is another reason I love recommending this one: profits from the book benefit International Justice Mission, an organization that works to protect people who are vulnerable to violence and exploitation. That feels especially fitting for a book centered on women in Scripture who have often been marginalized, misread, or denied agency in the way their stories are told.
